At our dental clinic, many of our patients struggle with tooth decay. If you are worried about your teeth decaying and want to know more about what you can do to keep this from occurring, we are here to help.
How Does Tooth Decay Happen?
Plaque is a colourless, sticky substance that blankets your teeth and allows bacteria to eat away at your tooth enamel. Although many different types of foods cause plaque, some of the biggest culprits are foods that are rich in sugar and carbohydrates, like juices, candy, soda, and breads.
When plaque first covers your teeth, it will start to attack your enamel by releasing acid and making the enamel soft. If the plaque is not removed, the acid will create a hole in the enamel that allows the bacteria living in the plaque to enter the inside of the tooth. This is now a cavity that needs to be removed.
What Can You Do to Prevent Tooth Decay?
The best news our dental clinic can give you is that tooth decay can be prevented by eating a well-balanced diet and maintaining proper oral hygiene. We strongly encourage you to brush your teeth with a fluoride toothpaste, floss, and rinse your mouth to keep plaque from taking over, two to three times per day.
It’s also essential that you come and visit our dental clinic consistently to receive dental cleanings and checkups. If it’s been a while since your last checkup, contact our office today to set up your next appointment.
