An appointment with the dentist can cause anxiety and stress for many people. Whether it’s a strong aversion to the sound of a drill, fear of pain, or general discomfort in the dentist’s chair, sedation dentistry can help make your next dental appointment less stressful.
Sedation dentistry uses medications to help you relax and stay calm during your appointment and is also often referred to as sleep dentistry. However, in most instances, you remain awake but completely relaxed during your procedure.
The sedation level can vary from minimal to completely unconscious based on the length and complexity of your dental procedure and your level of anxiety.
- Oral Sedation- This type of dental sedation involves taking a pill prior to your appointment that will help bring you a sense of calm and reduce your nerves and stress. You’ll remain awake and alert but remain unworried during your appointment.
- Inhalation Sedation- Also known as laughing gas, this form of sedation is a mixture of oxygen and nitrous oxide administered through a mask. This is a form of light sedation that induces the feeling of calm and happiness.
- IV Sedation- If you have debilitating dental anxiety or need a long, complicated procedure, IV sedation is another option. Medication will be administered through an IV to keep you in a very deep state of calm and relaxation. Many patients have no recollection of the appointment using IV sedation.
