Root Canals, Midland, ON

  • Root canals are not as painful as you may believe. In fact root canals are used to alleviate pain, and many of our patients are surprised that they did not feel any additional discomfort during the procedure and felt far less pain afterwards.
  • Root canals do not take numerous visits. In most cases, root canals take just one or two visits. Only very rare cases may take more visits. Restoration of your tooth is recommended with a crown afterward, but that is not part of the root canal itself.
  • Root canals do not cause illness. It has become a myth that root canals trap bacteria and can lead to various health problems. There has been no research to support this fallacy.

Finally, you may think that root canals do not last very long. In a way, that is somewhat true, but not because the root canal itself failed. The removal of the nerve in the tooth does make it more brittle, but that can be resolved to a great extent by having a crown placed on the tooth. How long root canals will last depends on your lifestyle. What you eat and if you grind your teeth have an impact on how long your tooth will remain unbroken.

At Georgian Shores Dental Centre, we are more than happy to discuss all the various misconceptions about root canals with you before you undergo this procedure. We want you to be completely comfortable with your decision. Our warm and friendly staff will always make you feel at ease as we improve your smile!

Root Canal FAQs from Our Experts!

There are some dental procedures that even the bravest of patients are a little apprehensive about- and root canals are normally on that list! Here at Georgian Shores Dental Centre, we want to help you put your mind at ease when it comes to this procedure and assure you that there is nothing to fear. We encounter a lot of similar questions when it comes to root canals, and we wanted to put together a FAQ section to help alleviate some of your concerns. Consider some of the following questions and answers:

What is a root canal?

A root canal is a dental procedure where the dental root, located inside the tooth, is cleaned and filled.

Why do I need a root canal?
Sometimes the inside of your tooth (called the “dental pulp” or “pulp chamber”) can become infected. This causes swelling and pain along the roots of your tooth, also located in the pulp chamber. This can be hard to treat and painful to endure.
Does it hurt?
The root canal is no more painful than a usual cavity filling procedure. In fact, it often helps to alleviate and relieve the pain you’ve been experiencing!
How long will it take?
Depending on the tooth and the severity, you might have a 1-2 hour office visit. Occasionally you will need two appointments, but many times the root canal can completed in a single appointment.
Should the tooth be pulled instead?
No! If at all possible, it is best for your wallet and your dental health to keep your original teeth, even if you need to alter them a bit with a root canal.

If you have other questions that we didn’t answer about root canals, we would love to chat more with you. Please contact us today for an appointment to discuss your oral health.
