Dental hygiene is an often-overlooked part of keeping yourself healthy. While most people recognize the importance of brushing their teeth twice a day, not everyone knows that there is much more to maintaining your dental health. Here are four of our top tips for improving your dental hygiene.

4 of Our Top Tips for Improving Your Dental Hygiene

  1. Floss every day. Brushing your teeth is a great start to a healthy dental hygiene routine, but brushing alone isn’t enough to remove the plaque and food remnants on your teeth. It’s important to floss once a day to reach the space between your teeth that toothbrushes can’t get to.
  1. Use mouthwash. For the non-visible bacteria that rest on your teeth, mouthwash is an excellent resource for maintaining proper dental hygiene. Antibacterial mouthwash targets bacteria that contribute to tooth decay as well as bad breath. It’s also a good idea to avoid mouthwash with alcohol, as this can dry out your mouth.
  1. Avoid tobacco products. Smoking and using tobacco are linked to many different health issues, but did you know they can cause oral problems as well? To help prevent issues like gum disease, avoid smoking and using other tobacco products.
  1. Visit your dentist regularly. For most people, visiting a dentist regularly means scheduling appointments every 6 to 12 months, though you may need to go more frequently if you have pre-existing dental issues. A dentist will help identify underlying dental problems that you may not have realized you had.
