Periodontitis, or gum disease, consists of the swelling of the gums around your teeth. When left untreated, it can cause your gums to deteriorate, increasing your chances of bacterial infections, tooth decay, and tooth loss in more severe cases. Fortunately, when you come to us at Georgian Shores Dental Centre, it shouldn’t have to come to that because we can offer periodontal gum therapy to resolve the gum disease instead.

How to Prepare for Periodontal Gum Therapy

Here are a few ways you can prepare for the therapy.

  1. Know what to expect: Our periodontal gum therapy can involve a few different methods, including scaling, root planing, and medication. The medication would be to reduce risk of infection and reduce swelling, the scaling involves removing plaque and tarter from your teeth, and root planing is removing the plaque and tartar from the roots of your teeth below the gumline to create a smooth surface for the gums to reattach to.
  1. Ask for help easing any anxiety: If the aforementioned methods of periodontal gum therapy cause anxiety for you or make you nervous, we can discuss the options available to make the process more comfortable and less stressful. We might recommend spreading the treatment over multiple visits instead of doing it all at once, apply anesthetic gel to a part of your mouth or gums to reduce the sensation of the procedure, or prescribe an antibiotic to reduce the inflammation of tender gums.
  1. Don’t be afraid to ask questions: Another way to prepare yourself for your periodontal gum therapy is by asking any questions you may have. We are happy to provide the details you need to know about the different methods of therapy or address any other questions or concerns you may have.
